Happy blogging life!

2011 saw the first anniversary of my new blog! Hooray! Time indeed flies fast, right? Additionally, I’ve been to two blog events: the Cebu Blog Camp 2011 (May) and the Visayas Blogging Summit (November) and I’d say I learned a lot of new things about blogging. Now I feel like I am gaining confidence as a blogger and as a person in general. I am just happy that I am slowly coming out of my shell by going out to functions and social events and meeting online friends in person.

“Starry, starry” year! 

2011 was pretty exciting because I got to meet and greet several Filipino celebrities. (Talk about shallow dreams of a probinsyana!). Early in July, I went to ABS-CBN studios and watched Showtime, a variety/talent show. There I saw Anne Curtis, Vhong Navarro, Vice Ganda, Kuya Kim, Ryan Bang, and the rest of the hosts. I especially wanted to talk to Ryan Bang to test my Korean speaking skills but I didn’t get the chance to do so. I was able to visit the waiting rooms, walked through the infamous ABS-CBN lobby of the stars (where I saw Luis Manzano), peeked through the live shooting of another show, ate at their canteen, and went to the Big Brother’s house! In November, I went back to ABS-CBN and saw John Lloyd Cruz in the lobby! Hahaha~ but more important than that was the opportunity to witness a studio interview that was being aired on cable TV at the same time. It was cool!

Late in July, I was in Bohol for the annual Sandugo Festival. But it was more special because I actually went out to watch the Kapuso Night with my sisters and two other friends! It was my first time! The show had several Kapuso stars from Manila: Katrina Halili, Daniel Matsunaga, Paolo Contis, Gretchen Espina, Moymoy Palaboy, Julian Trono (who totally made my sisters into crazy fangirls! :p), and some more. As if the special seats weren’t enough, we followed them to the restaurant where they were having dinner . Lucky enough, we got the opportunity to give our hi’s and hello’s, but really it was mostly pikchur-pikchur!! Hahaha~ Big thanks to Ms. Anna Igpit for the special pass! *wink

The highlight, however, of this starry starry year would have to be meeting beauty titlists! They are Ms. Anna Igpit, Ms. Sian Maynard, Ms. Karla Henry, and Ms. Shamcey Supsup!  I met all four of them last October! And I’d say they are pretty and friendly in person!

Going back, this “starry, starry” year brought me many realizations: I had a glimpse of what a celebrity’s life is like, I now know how it feels to watch a live show; I now know what it is like to be a fan and follow celebrities around. I just couldn’t believe that I met people who I only see on TV or on magazines! Two thumbs up for that!

I flew 3 times this year!

If you were able to follow my old blog, you’d be aware of how fascinated I am with airplanes and travelling in general. It is my childhood dream to ride an airplane and it was only in 2008 when I first flew. 2011 is a special year because I flew 3 times!

June 2011 – I was sent on an official work trip to Manila along with two officemates. The trip brought me to SM Megamall, SM San Lazaro, SM Valenzuela and SM Dasmarinas and we stayed in Antipolo, Rizal for the night. In a sudden twist of fate, we went to Salon de Ning at The Peninsula Hotel Manila and I was only wearing shorts + cardigan (pictured above)! Talk about not dressing accordingly! :p

July 2011 – This trip was a special one since it was a graduation gift from my mother. I went to Manila with my cousin primarily to visit our relatives who we have not seen for the longest time. We made a side trip to UP Diliman in Quezon City. (Oh how I’ve been longing to visit this school!) We watched Showtime LIVE. We traveled to SM City Lipa and Fernando Airbase in Batangas (the land trip was fun, by the way!) and we went to some more places within the metro. This trip rather solidified my fears of living/getting a job in Manila. It’s just totally different from my life in Cebu!

November 2011 – I flew to Manila alone FOR THE FIRST TIME! J It was a little nerve-racking figuring out how to go about with the airport’s system and commuting all the way to your specific destination in a place you’re unfamiliar with. But I managed through it anyway, so yeah.. As long as you know how to read, write and speak, travelling should not be a problem. Just make sure your cell phone is fully charged, and you have enough money! One regret: I was not able to document my first solo trip!!! I brought a lot of things with me (since this was an official work trip) and there weren’t extra hands to hold the camera! Boooooo!

Gotta love little surprises!

My Dec 2011 was an exciting one because small surprises came my way. First, I received a gift card from my UP FA ID family. Second, I won a gift certifcate for Sumo Sam Cebu through an online contest at ZeroThreeTwo. Third, I won the Picture Picture segment of Mag TV Na!, a local TV show.  I wouldn’t know about it if my friends in Bohol didn’t message me in Facebook saying “I saw you on TV”, or “your photo won!”.. and I was like “wow, I must be pretty blessed this month!”.

I gave an inspirational talk 

This one is overwhelming. In November, I was given an opportunity to give a small talk to a group of students who are taking the same course I took in college. I shared them my journey as a student, gave them survival tips, injected a bit of humor (and warnings. Hehe), talked about my post-college life, and what-have-yous. But while doing it was fun, I realized that I am growing old already. Read more about this experience here.

I am a working girl now! 

I think this is the highlight of my 2011. I am now finished with school and got a job to boot as well as several changes that came with it. I moved to a new room, have different set of wardrobe, manage my own finances, and so on and so forth. The transition from school/student life to office girl life was generally smooth. I am just thrilled that I am finally starting a life on my own. It’s a little scary but I got the hang of it. I am Miss Independent now. =) You can read more of my working girl life here.

2011 Realizations

The year, as a whole, has been great for me. More positive things came my way although of course there were still the negative ones. 2011 marked my first year of transition to adulthood (finishing school and getting a job). I learned a lot of new things that weren’t taught in school as well as experienced a variety of adventures. This leaves me super excited for 2012. I wonder what’s in store for me.

First song for my first post would be NS Yoon-G’s 마녀가 된 이유 (The Reason I became a Witch)

This song was released just yesterday! Right then and there I knew I’d go into LSS mode with it.

I’ve known NS Yoonji for a while now though I didn’t really pay attention to her and her songs.  I just know that she’s the host of Arirang’s tv show called Pops In Seoul (which I used to watch when I still had lots of free time!) and she’s a cousing of Jiyoung (of girl group KARA) This song, however, got my attention. At first, I thought it would be a dance track.. something that is really danceable, or maybe a sort of bubblegum song. Turns out, it’s an electronic song with a hint to rock. The music video is quite ok, though I think there is something lacking. So much dance parts perhaps? I wonder how it would turn out if she did a female-rocker-in-concert type of concept. But I’m pretty good with it. It still rocks!

Anyways, I like the song because there’s that “fierce” feeling to it.. like an “independent woman” type of song! The lyrics focused on a woman becoming strong and independent after a break up.  The melody sounds strong. The accompanying music is strong as well. Aaaaaand she speaks English pretty well! It’s a good track to start my 2012.

1. I liked it when her back-up dancers appeared (see 0:27 mark on the video)

2. I like the chorus’ melody and lyrics! LSS mode la la la la la la~ I hate you, forget you.. niga sirheo!

3. I like her hairstyle during the chorus (1:21 mark on the video). She looks good with blonde hair!

4. I like her clothes during the second chorus (1:53 on the video). I’m biased because I have this special connection towards loose tops, specially the white ones! :p

5. I only wish though that she pulled a high note on the last chorus. That would’ve been more daebak! But anyway, I think this is by far her best track. So much for the pop/cute-sy type of songs. This fierce and strong image suits her better.

I am looking forward to her comeback stages and see if her live perf (voice, I’m pointing at you) will be as fierce as the one in the video. Hmmm..

This is the second post of I-don’t-know-how-many-to-go series. Please bear with me. I am writing this series because I want to share what I’ve learned and what I will be learning in my first job. Plus, I’m naturally a story-teller you know. Haha~

Previously, I’ve listed down 5 items that I experienced/learned over the first months of being an employee. I realized that are a lot of things that you’ll encounter, much less the unexpected ones, and sometimes you end up surprised. So far, I’m doing alright with the transition from school to work. Though I’ll say I am still adjusting to this whole kind of life. So here goes another batch:

6.) Work under constant pressure

Let’s just say there are seriously so many things to do in the office, and with only a handful of people around, there’s not enough staff to do the work. Soon enough, I was placed on what I called “pressure zone” where I was given a major project and still had to juggle several projects of smaller scale. It was a mess during the early stage because all projects required equal parts of my attention plus the deadlines I had to beat. There were a lot of sleepless nights and no-eating-workdays.  It was a long journey but thankfully, I managed to get through it. My realization: my brain works better when I’m pressured. Kidding.  Now I know what “multi-tasking” is like in the real world!

7.) Budget money! For food, for transportation

Right now, I live using my money. That means I buy my food and other personal necessities, handle my transportation expenses, and somehow pay for the place I am staying. I don’t ask money from my parents anymore. With that, I am striving to live my life wisely. I admit that there were times when I almost ran out of money because: I bought this and that, I often ate at fast food chains and fancy restaurants, and my transportation expenses quadrupled because I took cabs going to work several times. (I have valid excuses to back that up!) I realized that when I’m running out of money, nobody’s going to help me and I end up starving so I could stretch whatever’s left until the next pay-day. That’s a shame. My money-saving tactics for 2011 were all wasted. I will have to double my efforts in planning my finances. That’s my top priority for next year!

8.) I got an overload of information on things that weren’t taught in school.

It was pretty alarming at first, to learn all the new information related to my work that I didn’t encountered in school. Sometimes I’d look clueless (and stupid) during meetings when all the senior professionals would battle it all out in the board room discussing this and that. At one point, I told myself that I should probably go back to school and read more books so I could confidently join the conversation. But I realized that this is exactly why they say “experience is the best teacher”. There are a lot of things that aren’t/couldn’t be taught in school. And sometimes, these things are far more important! I’d get tips from people I consider my mentors, some fallacies get corrected, I’d hear words of wisdom, as well as criticisms and an equal share of professional pranks. I get excited when I get overloaded with new information. Indeed, learning is a continuous process.

9.) Getting sick.

The disadvantage when you work too much is that your body may not be able to handle the stress and pressure. I’ve somehow reached this point in the 7 months that I’ve been working. Nothing serious though. I just needed a day or so to give myself a break. I needed time to recharge. But you see, when you are really into your work, you might forget other things. Say, your regular eating time, or your regular sleeping hours. It should not be that way. No  matter how dedicated or hardworking of an employee you are, health should always come first. It’s our only “puhunan” anyway.

10.) Gain new friends!

What you see above is a picture of me and the new friends that I met during my first few months into work. If there’s one thing I like about jumping unto a new environment, it’s the fact that I’ll meet new faces who I wish will become my friends. I am happy that I was able to connect with them easily despite the fact that I am somewhat a shy girl. It usually takes me some time before I’d feel at ease with new people I meet but these guys have no “ka-artehan”. So it was not so hard to befriend them. For that, and for more months (and hopefully, years) of friendship to come, THANK YOU guys!

Regardless of age, gifts can really make a person happy. Merry Christmas, everyone! =)

Browsing online, I stumbled upon a website that featured a new brand of planner. The cover caught my attention because it was black and white. (I have a soft spot for black/white color combo. Hihih~) Further research showed that the planner has this “artsy” feel to it with all the featured doodles. That’s pretty much my type! It’s also locally-made and far more affordable than those I mentioned above!

It was a planner from FILED. I knew I had to get one, by hook or by crook! :p

Yesterday, I finally bought it!!! This is actually the first ever expensive planner that I really bought for myself! (The probinsyana in me values money so much that I only spared Php200-300 as budget for my 2012 planner) But then I didn’t have the slightest doubt to get this as a Christmas gift for myself because I think I somehow deserve a reward for a year’s hardwork.

So here’s a tally of the reasons why I am more than pleased to have a FILED 2012 planner:

1.) It’s small enough to fit even in my weekend bag. And it’s also comfortable to write in.

2.) I like the featured illustrations for every month. Each month has an introductory doodle representing that month’s occasion. Oh I love the little monsters!

3.) There’s monthly and daily views. With this, I can map out ahead what’s going to happen for a specific month and then fill out the details in the daily view. Additionally, there’s a little box for important dates. I am really happy with this feature because I seriously take note of birthdays!

4.) There’s a monthly expense tracker! This will really be helpful to me. I’ve just started working and this feature would help me manage my cash flow. (It’s as if I earn and spend a lot! :p) But either way, self-control is the key. I know that this feature will push me to beef up my money-saving tactics!

5.) A daily mood-indicator will urge you to doodle your mood for the day. Hmmm.. maybe I should also state the reason for that chosen mood. And by the end of the year, I will count the number of smiley and angry/sad faces I doodled! Haha~ I bet this will be fun!

6.) There’s a Think-tank page. I like this feature also because I can jot down my initial plans/goals for 2013. I do this yearly as a sort of guide for the following year.

7.) There’s a list of movies to see, books to read, places to visit, and restaurants to try. It’s like a mini bucket list. I’ll fill this out and try my best to put check marks throughout the year.

8.) High Quality of paper and printing. I love the “crispiness” of the paper! Haha

The free bandolier is a bonus! Though I’m not so sure if the velcro attachment would last throughout the year. Oh well, others might even loose it eventually. Hehe~

Waaaaahhhh~ (that’s a scream!) I really like this planner!!!  I like it because it’s close to my personality. It is “artsy”. It is “crafty”. It is youthful. There’s energy to it! Yeah I am damn excited to start my 2012! Like, sooooooooooo excited! Haha~! Im’ma doodle the year away!!!

The Visayas Blogging Summit 2011 is a gathering of bloggers to talk issues and concerns related to blogging. This year’s summit happen to be the largest gathering of bloggers in the Philippines, and the most-awaited at that! (Ohh, I am looking forward to meeting other bloggers who inspire me!). Over 250 bloggers from different parts of the country will gather at SM City Cebu on November 26, 2011. That’s a lot I say!

In one of my earlier posts, I shouted out my happiness that I’ve finally completed my 14+ years of being a student (elementary school, high school, and college). It’s been more than four months since my college graduation and more than four months of being an employee. Yes, I am now part of my country’s workforce.

I am fortunate that I got hired right after I graduated. Though I kind of wished I enjoyed my summer vacation.. I would’ve at least prepared myself to be an employee. You know, like some sort of preparatory training. Anyhow, I immediately jumped into the “working girl” life and boy was it hard to adjust! :p

So now, I’m listing down some things that I experienced in my first months as an employee. Don’t ask what my job is because I will not tell you.

1.) A fire incident happened near my workplace.

I think of this as some sort of initiation for me. Barely two weeks into work, a fire incident happened at the back of our company building and scared the hell out of me. It was my first ever close encounter with a fire incident. Of course I panicked! (Yeah I know, I failed right? Haha) Who wouldn’t? Everybody in the building is running back and forth while screaming which items to save. Plus you would hear the siren of fire trucks coming one after the other. Also, there were several blasts from the fire site! And because I panicked, I couldn’t think properly on which items to save. Should I go bring the file folders with me or my sketches/drawings? Or better yet, should I just run out to save myself? That time, I did not have any back-up of my files in my computer, so I ended up carrying my iMac.. from our office in the 4^th floor down to the 1^st floor and then out to the open area across the street. And no elevator at that! Hahaha~ That was when I realized I’m pretty strong in times of emergency!  :p

2.) I was told, “you have to speak with confidence”.

I heard this line from my boss one month into work and it shook me. I was still adjusting to the whole “working girl” lifestyle. I am not really confident of myself, of my skills set, and of my capabilities. I think I am pretty conscious with age and authority levels. So being told of this line meant that I should look at myself and try doing it. If I have to say something and I know it’s correct, I should say it with certainty. Especially when dealing with people outside our office, I should know how to say things straight or when and when not to exert authority. More than 6 months into work, I think I’m learning the ropes! *wink

3.) They call me “Ma’am Kai”.. but I prefer being called “Miss Kai”.. wait, there’s difference between the two, right?  I mean, aside from the spelling?  Kidding aside, I think that Miss Kai is more appropriate for my face/personality.. :p On a serious note, I kinda like being called either of the two because I really feel that I am a working girl, and I am at least a somebody. Now people don’t underestimate me just because I look younger than my age and that I have a small built. Read: you are a nobody. But when office hours are over, I ask my colleagues to scratch the “miss” and just call me “Kai” instead. They’re older than me anyway!

4.) Resist drinking or going out at night.

Not that I drink now, okay? I’m still within the water-iced tea-fruit juice (and now, coffee) boundary! But you see, when your office mates are in the mood to unwind, you cannot easily escape. You got to go with the flow, regardless of where they want to chill out and relax. So when I reached my first month into work, my office mates invited me to join them on a saturday night gig. We went to MO2 Restobar for dinner and a little karaoke session for the night. They cannot believe that at my age, I don’t drink alcoholic drinks and that it was my first time on that place, and on that kind of chilling out in general.

Well, in my current situation, I cannot tolerate this (going out late at night). Primarily because my house is very far from where I am working so I need to be home on of before 8pm for of safety reasons. You know, I gotta be careful with the society’s  bad elements. Secondly, I don’t really like going out to eat/drink because my heart breaks when I burn my hard-earned cash I prefer going to bed and sleep! :p In my world, curling up in my bed with a book and some good music is better than going to restaurants and eating the night away. Also, I’m a little allergic to socializing in general. HEHE~

5.) Overtime and going home late at night

This ought to be on top of my least-favorite part of being a working girl! Really! I know that having overtime at work cannot be avoided at times, but I hate staying up too late and having to wake up so early the following day. Like I have mentioned earlier, I hate (like super super hate!) going home late because I’m scared of the society’s bad elements. Read: snatchers, hold-uuppers, rapists, gangsters, and the likes. Also, when I go home late, I pay quadruple the price of my regular fare. Why? Because I have to hire a private vehicle (our local tricycle) to take me directly to my house. Much like a cab but a little lower in price. I don’t take cabs because they’re way too pricey for me and safety is not guaranteed either. (you know, all the news about cabs taking advantage of their passengers in the form of kidnapping, and what-have-yous). Paying quadruple the amount of my regular fare is so much of a burden for me because my cashflow gets ruined! Well I just hope this won’t become a regular routine as I continue to do my job.

It wasn’t really the formal forum that you’re thinking of (or else I’d die of nervousness!). It was just a small class discussion of some sort, like I was a visiting lecturer! I laughed a little when I started introducing myself because I suddenly felt old (read: age) talking in front of the youngsters. Plus they addressed me with a “Ma’am”! *rolls eyes* I really think that “Miss” or “ate” sounds better and more appropriate for my face/personality. Hahaha. (I’m only 1-2 years older than them, you know~ :p)

It was good that the talk was in an informal setting. That way, I did not feel very nervous. Though I wish I could’ve prepared a little presentation for them because I wanted a visual discussion. Nevertheless, the interaction between me and students was good. I wanted them to feel comfortable with me. I wanted them to ask a lot of questions. I tried hard to get them to speak and I think they did pretty well.

We exchanged thoughts on topics related to Industrial Design, like: conceptualization of projects, skills and tools of trade, material explorations, educational tours, OJT/internship opportunities, thesis projects, ID studies versus relationships (read: boyfriend/girlfriend. *coughs*), expected salary, their ID idols, and a lot more, plus little jokes here and there. I switched mode when I talked about being serious with their chosen field of studies. I admit to feeling like an old maid, or sounding like a mother, but there’s nothing more important than stressing the idea of being serious on something that could be your means of living in the future. I also made emphasis on several other points which I felt are important: self-confidence, value of researching/self-study, time management, speaking English, etc. Overall, I totally enjoyed my time! For a while, I felt like a teacher! J

I’m thankful to kuya Jum (Lester Ouano, my highschool senior) for this opportunity. (Greetings going out to Mr. Miki Hironori, too!) Even though I am not really an established designer (I don’t dare to call myself as one. There goes my confidence level going down again), I feel privileged to be given this chance to share my story to the young ones. I don’t have that much experience to share since I’m a newbie myself, but being able to speak in front of them is just fulfilling. You know, sharing my journey to them as if they’re all like my younger sisters/brothers. I just hope they learned a thing or two from me. =)

From this little talk, I realized that there is a big picture I gotta complete. I have my plans and I feel the need to see things from afar and check where/what/which stage I’m currently in. This is no longer just a play. This is already what’s called LIFE. I’m starting out my journey and I feel I need to double my efforts. The world and the people out there are pretty picky, sensitive, judgemental and sharp. I gotta be cautious. I gotta be wise. I gotta be strong.

For now, I’m just happy to cross out another item in my 50-things List! Thanks be to God!

P.S.  Well, we’re hoping we could snatch the students’ idol, Mr. Kenneth Cobonpue, for an interview/forum in the future!

Because of the influx of Koreans living in Cebu city, the local government thought of  hosting a festival that would introduce the culture and traditions of Korea to the local people. They declared the first Saturday of October as “Korean Day”.

This year marks the first and they had several activities lined up for the locals: there was a Korea Film Festival, a food bazaar, a parade, and a search for Cebu K-pop Star. The main event was held yesterday at the Ayala Terraces, where it attracted over a thousand Koreans (and some other foreigners, too!). Also in great attendance were the Cebuanos, mostly teens who are fans of KPOP. *cough, count me in, cough* :p

Several food stalls lined up the sides in which various Korean food/snacks were made available for everyone. I still prefer a full-course Korean meal over finger food! Heh~

The program featured several performances from the Korean people. From what I can remember, there were the Hwagwan dance (lower right photo), the Gyeong Bok Gung Taryeong (upper right photo), the Fan Dance (upper left photo), and a traditional dance called Samulnori (lower left photo) specially performed by the Yeosu City performers. I’d pick the last stage as my favorite!

There was also a mini fashion show that featured several versions of the Hanbok, Korea’s national costume. This segment brought back memories from 4 years ago when I wore the Hanbok to a school festival. Big thanks to that Hanbok’s owner!

A much-awaited segment of the program were the performances of the winners from the search for Cebu KPOP Star. The competition was held the day before and the top 3 groups took the stage. These kids showed that Cebuanos can also rock to the tune of Korean songs. The performers included Say A (sorry no picture of them) who sang and danced to Miss A’s Goodbye Baby. In third place were Scene E who did a rendition of T-Ara’s Roly Poly. Second place went to Rainbow Angels who covered A Pink’s It Girl. Lastly, the declared winner was Generation Next (pictured above in white costumes) who performed Seo Nyeo Shi Dae’s Seowoneul Malhaebwa. Two of these groups got the top prize which is of a round-trip ticket to South Korea! I died. Haha~

Special stages were presented by 3 visiting groups. X-crew (pictured above in white clothes) danced to a medley of Super Junior songs much to the contentment of Kpop fans! 4NE1 presented a medley of 2NE1 songs. Off-Limits Crew danced to several songs of SHINee. These groups won in various Kpop-related competitions in Manila.

The event capped with all the performers being called out. There I saw smiles from both Koreans and Cebuanos, pretty much an evidence of fun and happiness. The event left me looking forward to next year’s! Hopefully they could invite an artist/group/actor/actress from South Korea! HEH~

Here’s to hoping the friendship between the Koreans and the locals will get stronger!

I decided to write this post because I’m just so happy with my latest KPOP discoveries!

U-KISS is back! And boy are they oh-so-manly!

I don’t know but the first time I heard this song, I instantly got hooked! I liked the melody. I liked the vibe that this song is giving off. I liked the powerful choreography. And not to mention, I liked the set of stage costumes for this song!

But the main point of this post is about the powerful choreography.. What I like about Korean Pop “idols” is that they sing and dance at the same time. And it’s not an easy task. Think about the many days spent on practicing the routine. Not to mention, all the injuries you might acquire on the process. Of course, it’s not enough that you do the dance steps alone. It has to have the right amount of energy so it wouldn’t look like you lack sleep or what not.

Another example would be this practice video of Chocolat, a new group who just debuted unto the Kpop scene. Just seeing the girls dance in high heels make me wonder how many days did they spend in practicing this routine.

I’m no good dancer, but I love to dance. And I want to try this one. I’m curious on what it feels like to dance in high heels, and with fast/powerful choreography.. Hmm..

Edit: This post feels like it was written hurriedly. Haha. Nevertheless, I really just want to write about Korean “idols” song-and-dance routines. And by the way, I’m practicing Chocolat’s routine. I’m halfway na! I’ll try to post a dance cover video! (baga’g nawng!)
